What is Craniosacral Therapy?
When I was a senior in college, I had been in counseling for awhile and felt that I had hit a wall. I understood the causes of my anxiety, but I could feel that my patterns lived in my body, not just my mind. Talking things out wasn’t enough. I decided to work with a Craniosacral therapist named Susan Raffo, who was kind and warm and whose office became my refuge.
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment modality that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health. It works with the central nervous system, the fluid in the brain and spinal cord, and connective tissue to restore balance so the body can heal itself. It’s incredibly soothing and relaxing.
I would leave each session with her and feel everything shifting within me. I took long naps after the sessions and woke up with enormous amounts of energy. I would clean out closets, or finally tackle a task I had been avoiding. I started to truly take care of myself. I worked with her regularly for six months, and then I graduated and moved away. The lessons of our work together have stayed with me ever since.
Craniosacral therapy gave me back my connection to my body and taught me how to listen to its wisdom. It helped me release self-sabotaging patterns on a physical level, freeing up space in my body and mind for new experiences.
When I offer Craniosacral therapy sessions to my clients, I always start by grounding myself. I take a few deep breaths and find the place of deep stillness within me, so I can be fully present with my client.
Each time I do this, I feel gratitude for Susan, who helped me discover that I had a place of stillness inside myself and that by tapping into that place I would find all the strength, power, and peace I was looking for.
